Given the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the steady stream of terror bombings and mass shootings, it seems that a title on trauma and related disorders would have an audience wanting to understand more about the many types of trauma-related concerns that individuals and society face. Authors Doctor and Shiromoto have combined their years of experience teaching psychology and specializing in disaster response to coauthor a new title in the Facts On File Library of Health and Living series. According to the authors, 5.2 million people suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) every year. PTSD and other traumas have replaced anxiety and depression as the main reasons for seeking therapy. Traumatic stress can be caused by any number of life events (child abuse, rape, terrorism, and violent crime, to name a few), and in addition to PTSD, numerous other physical- and mental-trauma illnesses and topics are discussed in this volume. A similar volume, The Encyclopedia of Psychological Trauma, by Gilbert Reyes et al. (Wiley, 2009), is aimed at practitioners and researchers, whereas this volume is intended more as an introduction for students and general readers. More than 300 entries cover a range of topics from “Bullycide” and bullying to Recovered memory to Spirituality and trauma. A thorough bibliography at the end of the book as well as references cited in individual entries can provide further reading. The index is useful in getting to the right topic, and as always in this series, related entries are highlighted in the text. Several appendixes provide a list of state and federal emergency-management agencies, important national associations related to trauma, and state mental-health agencies. Recommended for consumer-health collections. Also available as an e-book. --Gillian Engberg
